The True Egyptian Story That Inspired Our Hardest Escape Room: Amarna Letters

If you love ancient mysteries, palace intrigue, and stories where every decision could shape an empire, the tale of Egypt’s Amarna Period is one you need to know. What happened after Pharaoh Akhenaten died is one of the most thrilling and mysterious moments in ancient history—and it helped inspire Amarna Letters, the most difficult escape room at Escape in Time.

Let’s travel back 3,000 years to a time of radical change, power struggles, forbidden letters, and a prince who never made it.

👑 A Pharaoh Falls, and the Empire Begins to Crack

Pharaoh Akhenaten was no ordinary ruler. He turned Egypt upside down by banning the worship of traditional gods and forcing the kingdom to serve Aten, the sun disk. He moved the capital to a brand-new city, Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna), and built temples in his new god’s honor.

But when Akhenaten died around 1336 BCE, Egypt was left in religious chaos, politically weakened, and vulnerable to internal betrayal.

The throne passed to his young son—Tutankhaten—who quickly changed his name to Tutankhamun to restore Egypt’s traditional religion and avert religious upheaval. But behind this boy-king stood two powerful men:

  • Ay: An aging royal advisor and high priest with deep influence in the court.

  • Horemheb: A power hungry military general with the loyalty of Egypt’s armies.

Both men were waiting in the wings eager for power.

💌 The Queen's Forbidden Letter: A Real-Life Diplomatic Bombshell

When Tutankhamun (King Tut) suddenly died in his teens—without an heir—Egypt faced a succession crisis.

But one woman, caring for her people, refused to hand the throne over to men like Ay or Horemheb.

A letter, discovered in the archives of Egypt’s rival, the Hittite Empire, reveals a desperate plea from an Egyptian queen (possibly Ankhesenamun) to the Hittite king, Suppiluliuma I:

"My husband has died and I have no son. They say you have many sons. If you will send me one of your sons, he will become my husband and king of Egypt. Never will I take a servant of mine and make him my husband!"

This was unprecedented. A queen of Egypt requesting a foreign prince to become Pharaoh? It was bold. It was dangerous. And it was a direct threat to Ay and Horemheb’s ambitions.

⚔️ Assassination on the Road to the Throne

After checking the request, the Hittite king sent his son, Prince Zannanza, to Egypt to marry the queen and claim the crown.

But he never arrived.

Prince Zannanza was murdered en route, most likely on the orders of Ay or Horemheb. His death sent a clear message: no foreigner would ever sit on the throne of Egypt.

Shortly after, the crafty priest Ay declared himself Pharaoh and married the widowed queen. Her name—once carved in stone—vanished from the historical record forever.

🧹 Horemheb Wipes the Slate Clean

Ay ruled for only a few years before the mighty general Horemheb seized the throne, backed by military power. Once in control, he launched a campaign to erase the entire Amarna chapter from history:

  • He removed Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Tutankhamun, and Ay from the king lists.

  • He restored the temples of the old gods.

  • He commissioned statues and inscriptions that declared himself the rightful ruler, chosen by the gods.

If not for the discovery of the Amarna Letters, hidden diplomatic records, and the tomb of Tutankhamun, this entire chapter of history may have been forgotten.
