How Escape in Time Became a Hub for Budding Artists with the Sailers
In 2020, the world changed overnight. The Covid lockdown saw schools, venues, churches, and countless other spaces shut their doors, devastating many livelihoods in the process.
At Escape in Time, we decided to open our doors to those in need of space.
This decision allowed us to welcome a talented couple, the Sailers, who began teaching small groups of children the wonders of painting, drawing, sculpting, and much more.
The Sailers, with their passion for art and education, saw an opportunity to keep creativity alive despite the challenges of the pandemic. They started with small, intimate classes, ensuring safety while nurturing the artistic spirit of young minds.
Children who had suddenly found themselves without a creative outlet were given a chance to express themselves fully in a supportive environment.
As the initial sessions blossomed into a thriving program, our partnership with the Sailers grew. What began as a few classes has now evolved into weekly art sessions, collaborations on themed escape rooms, and even field trips designed to teach children the fundamentals of creating art.
These field trips provide a hands-on experience where kids can explore various art forms and techniques, encouraging them to unleash their imagination and creativity.
Benefits of Children Engaging in Art Practice
Engaging children in art practice and developing skills through in-person, hands-on application has numerous benefits, including:
Enhanced Creativity: Art allows children to express themselves creatively, encouraging them to think outside the box and explore their imagination.
Improved Motor Skills: Activities like drawing, painting, and sculpting help improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Better Academic Performance: Many studies have shown that children who participate in the arts often perform better academically, particularly in subjects like math and reading.
Emotional Expression: Art provides a healthy outlet for children to express their emotions and develop emotional intelligence that can be fine tuned through instruction.
Problem-Solving Skills: Creating art involves making choices and solving problems, which helps children develop critical thinking skills.
Increased Confidence: Successfully creating a tangible piece of art can boost a child's confidence and sense of accomplishment.
Cultural Awareness: Art education exposes children to different cultures and perspectives, fostering empathy and understanding.
Stress Relief: Engaging in creative activities can be a great way for children to relax and reduce stress while creating something wonderful.
Our collaboration with the Sailers has become a cornerstone of our community engagement.
Each week, our venue buzzes with the excitement of children discovering new ways to express themselves through art. The impact has been profound, fostering a community where creativity and learning are celebrated.
